You always hear about lithium demand, but !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on the front page got me digging deeper.... Our insatiable demand for energy results in dirty business, however clean some believe their choices are.

Definitely informative and thought provoking. I don’t really know that I’ve got anything valuable to add.

Fingers crossed for a hydrogen fuel cell?

Great now I have to go weigh a slice of bread because I don’t believe it only ways an ounce.

Does the world have more cobalt reserves, or Chevrolet Cobalts?

Another issue with Cobalt is it’s a raw for more than just tech. I work at a leading company in an industry that has nothing to do with technology and we use it for a raw in some products. This has been going on for a while and the double price is eating away our bottom line.

Ugh, that sucks... There are no islands in a global supply chain. What kind of products?

Since you can’t really “number” cobalt reserves unless you pick a unit, let’s go with overall weight. GM cranked out a grand total of 1,152,316 Cobalts, at an average weight of ~2800 lbs, for a total of 1,613,242 tons of Cobalt.

123,000 metric tons of cobalt were mined globally in 2014. Extrapolating, there has been/will be more cobalt in the world, by weight, than Cobalts, and as far as reserves... only Congo has more cobalt than the world had Cobalts.   https://www.statista.com/statistics/264930/global-cobalt-reserves/

Didn’t break my scale out but according to the nutrition facts on Dave’s Killer bread 1 slice=45g or 1.6oz

I think Wonder is the universally accepted standard for bread unit weight.

How does Cobalt reserves vs requirements for electric cars compare to platinum reserves vs requirements for a gas car?

“There are between 3-7 grams of platinum group metals in a standard catalytic converter, but the amount varies based on manufacturer and model.”

“The ratio, in terms of availability, of platinum to gold is 1:15. ... It is also difficult to acquire a lot of it, as it will take 10 tons of raw platinum ore to come up with a single ounce of pure platinum.”

Color pigments for a bunch of different industries. Not exactly something as a raw you’d expect for a color but it sucks.
